I wouldn't be surprised if every bride and groom considered eloping at least once during their engagement. I know we seriously did. When these two asked me to document their carefree dash to the San Francisco City Hall, I thought to myself "Good for them.". While I wouldn't change my beautifully traditional wedding, there is no denying that I was a tinge envious watching their adventure unfold. We ran to catch a train, stopped to marti gras, took off running again and before we knew it they were official. And, that's how it's done. Kudos and congratulations to two very beautiful people who ran with it.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Kristin is her wholehearted laugh. I adore these next two...

This blog has sort of bit the dust over the close of 2010. I've been making preparations to launch my website and in the process I've been neglecting making posts. Here is a recent session I did with a beautiful family from The Bay. I am very excited to add a few of these to my portfolio. Each time I go back and look at these images I am awe struck. Christian & Erin had a perfect wedding. There was so much love and happiness present it was almost overwhelming, and on more than one occasion I had to find a corner to wipe my girly eyes. I told you these two had it. They own IT. Drifting {Jeremy & Vanessa}

Jeremy and I went to the Rocky Mountain School of Photography together. It wasn't until the last few weeks of school that we officially met, and it was only shortly after that that my husband and Jeremy had devised a serious plan for that year's ski season. At the end of school Jeremy introduced us to his lovely, and I mean lovely, girlfriend Vanessa. Ever since then Jeremy and Vanessa have been having us over weekly for some killer dinners and an ongoing battle of Hearts. These two have been a pleasure to get to know, and I know that Nate and I are going to miss them dearly when we move. As I mentioned before, when Jeremy asked me to do their photos my nerves fried a little. But, of course, it ended up being a grand time, and if I may say so myself I came home with a handful of images I like to call magical. I hope you enjoy. Congratulations Jeremy and Vanessa!

Three Strikes You're In {Mallory Family} (Sneak Peek)

I have been trying to work in a session with the Mallory family for months now. Rain, stomach flu, you name it, we just couldn't seem to get a break. Today, on our third attempt, the weather tried to pull one over on us again. It took a bit of improvising, but things turned out. Here is one of the few shots we got outside. Everyone is Happy (Ever After, After All)

June 11. My brother, John, ties the knot. I can't begin to say how lucky this family of mine is. Elizabeth is just amazing. Amazing! Since John started bringing her around (I was 15) I have been completely in awe of her. She is partly to blame for my British Rock fetish, and not to mention that time 16 year old me strolled out of the bathroom with almost black hair. She has one sassy sense of humor, an unforgivable amount of natural beauty, one of my favorite laughs, and a refreshing amount of poise. She is the definition of ladylike. Most of all she is genuine, and we couldn't ask for more. That makes all of the Ruyle children signed, sealed and delivered. I think we can all take a huge sigh of relief in knowing that our family is complete and very happy so. We are SO lucky! Welcome to the family, Liz! We love you.

Summer Nights

Blogger gone MIA, right? It's been much too long, and my shoots are backing up. You may expect a good blogging tangent. Here we go...
Sarah is one of those people that strikes you before you even get a chance to meet them. I will always have the memory of the first time I saw her. Somehow her loveliness is worn right there on her sleeve. Along with being lovely Sarah is the definition of cute. Her sniff is even cute! (I'll admit right now that I've noticed) For this shoot a local string shop was kind enough to allow me to borrow a mandolin. That alone was a remarkable experience. Kind is an understatement. They offered me to take whatever I fancied, then to top it off they didn't want a credit card number for security! "Your name will do". So, thank you to the guys at the string shop (whom, by the way, did get their fine mandolin back), and to Sarah for making the photographs happen.

Talking with Trees

I was having a wonderful day. I had gotten off work early. I was scheduled to leave a day sooner than anticipated for a short vacation at my family's. The sun was shining. Then, out of a clear blue sky I was sitting on the side of the road. A few days later I was sitting by the pool with my favorite person, enjoying every minute of sunshine that damaged my skin, and need I mention the best ice cream one's ever had? There really should be some universal rule about ruining such bliss. The mood changed as fast as a text can be read. The ice cream started to sour in my stomach. Admittedly, for a moment one began to wonder about such blue skies. During this series of fortunate and unfortunate events I was lucky enough to have my camera. Whether it be car trouble or utter disappointment and letdown via text one was able to forget it all in a few shots.

A Funny Thing Called Love {continued}

There were so many moments from Christian and Erin's session that I loved, I just couldn't resist making another post. These two have IT. They're candidness is so admirable. For two people who don't enjoy being in front of the camera they flaunted the stuff that makes a photograph most appealing: honesty and a willingness to get caught during they're most campy, silly, and even awkward moments. This is how you stick it to all of those blasted photographs of women posing with their hand on their hip.

When Erin called me up prior to the shoot she warned me "We're terrible at getting our pictures taken". I think you can make your own opinion on this one, but I must add that not only was this completely untrue-they were possibly the easiest subject matter I've ever had! I am so happy that they have given me the honor of being a part of their marriage, and I look forward to the first June in Saturday (or first Saturday in June, I'm still not quite sure). Who's That Lady

I've been able to get behind the camera for some really great shoots lately. One of my more recent afternoon sessions was spent with Jentrie. There is so much to love about this girl. Personality: HUGE. Simply put, she is a true gem. And, need I mention those eyes? To say the least I was chuffed to bits when I got home and started viewing my takes on the computer. Happy Thursday!

The Elephant Is Still Pink

Maybe it was the bagel I ate for breakfast, or the regurgitated formula that covered my arm during a recent newborn session, or maybe it was the late night consulting my ipod for inspiration. There is still a small possibility that it was the sweet smelling skunk that has found it's home in our apartment's ventilation. Either way, I had an undeniable desire to create, and it wasn't going to be apple pie. Here is my rebuttal.

The West and It's Women

I have so much love for these two ladies that finding the right words is difficult. They are the honey in life. My mother has given me more love than I deserve along with the best friendship I will ever have. My aunt Nona is so many things. She is a favorite past time, a genuine smile, a good-night story, a strong mother, and a testimony of a woman madly in love. Together they share a passion for the west. These photos remind me of the days I spent on horseback under the hot Arizona sun with two amazing women...and of all the times I took a rock and chipped off pieces of the salt block in the corral so that I too could lick to my satisfaction.

Christmas at the Ruyle's: visit#3. I can't remember when all of us kids made it home for Christmas at the same time, but this year was a record. Seventeen was the merry total. I had to laugh when I finished developing this batch (at 2 AM) because of the variety of processing. Who was viewing this as a body, anyway? Warm that scroll finger up, this is a long one.

This last one was a complete grab shot, and although the quality isn't the best I love the moment.

3 Days of Christmas

Apparently Nate and I were really good this year. Santa found us three times. Visit #1: the Hansen's. Visit #2: our apartment. Visit #3: the Ruyle's. Our cups ranneth over. My coverage appears to have been rather narrow focused and I will have to apologize to all you big kids. Somehow my photos of anyone over four feet tall are few. Here is a collection from visit #1. Jaxson and Kennlyn had me jealous I wasn't a kid anymore.

Winter Wonderland Found

Christmas this year was to be spent in Montana with the Ruyle family. Nate and I loaded up the wagon and set off on the seven hour drive. Somewhere near the Idaho/Montana border we drove through nothing less than a wonderland. We stopped right there on the side of I-15, hopped a fence and ran around in the 16 degree weather as long as we could stand. Kudos to Nate for the photos of me!

Oh, the places you'll go. I probably wouldn't have thought that my first shoot in Salt Lake City would be a burlesque shoot. I happened across the opportunity of shooting four very lovely ladies attending beauty school just a few weeks ago. Thanks to Jeremy Koons I had all the gear a girl could ask for. Things I learned: girls are more confident just sportin' their underwear. You ladies are beautiful-thanks for all the fun!

Everything But The Camera {Do It To It}

I have become a very dull photographer to follow as I have been neglecting my camera, and spending much of my time in front of my computer playing at designing. For those who know me well it is an understatement that I am a control freak. Freak of the freaky-deaky sort. Handing my logo or site over to someone else would only prove painful (photographerzilla). That being said, the website is drawing nearer to completion and I should be able to take the camera off the shelf. I did manage to sneak in a self portrait session to keep from rusting.

This last image reminds me of the film "I want to live!". :) How very morbid!

Hallowed Tribute: Your Obsession & Mine

One year ago to the day instead of celebrating my last hours of the "free" and single life in a typical fashion I joined the family, gathered together our cleverly disguised nieces and nephews, and with delightful glee we scurried around the ever generous neighborhood begging for treats. Without even the slightest hint of guilt I stuffed myself with pizza and candy, got a mere four hours of sleep, painted my toe nails, shrugged at the mirror, got a lecturing for my disorganized extravaganza via the groom, marched into the temple, and 30 minutes later marched out Mrs. Hansen, grinning. Such is the memory of Halloween.

My skier husband appropriately spent this Halloween backcountry skiing with photographer Jeremy Koons, and I've spent the morning plotting our costumes for the evening. May yours be scary.

An Ode to Our Mother's Album

I was able to do a shoot with my sister and her beautiful little family only a few nights before they headed to Colorado. The sun was going down fast and some convincing was in order to get Jonathan (father) to believe it was going to be fun. Once I made my case we loaded up the car and drove out to one of the many glorious fields of Montana.

I was so happy to find this one when I got home. The baby is looking at the camera! My personal favorite.

Bethany and Seth are so animated! I ended up with a series of witty faces.

Jonathan had the vision for this pose. It turned out to be their favorite!

DAY FOUR.

To conclude our Adventure Photography class shoots we enjoyed a morning at Brennan's Wave. Mr. Woodward was another excellent model, though it was apparent he had other things on his mind. Kayakers will be kayakers. This day once again completely affirmed the beauty of strobes in the great outdoors.

Day Three.
Shooting with strobes outside was fantastic. Shooting Bob was even better. Listening to Bob's stories was undeniably best. For once I could have happily sat my camera down and tuned in. Not only did I walk away with some memorable images, but with enough ambition to dig my running shoes out of the bottom of my closet and hit the dirt. Thanks, Bob!

This class called "Adventure Photography"... it's been a journey. Heath Korvola has been a great addition to the learning experience, and I'm hoping that I will fully utilize all of the information he has been feeding us this week.

Five days filled with hours of shutter slapping, models, critique upon critique, hungry bees, hungry photographers, and most of all a new game plan.

DAY TWO

Getting there. My trigger finger was perspiring in the heat from lunge after lunge. We don't feel sorry for heat stroke suffering models.

Remembering we're here for the practice and trying even harder to forget the location, we milked our 30 minutes of shoot time. Milk was a bad choice, but I got a sweet Chaco tan.

This one's for you Kenda.

DAY ONE

And so it began. The first assignment of shooting "backpackers" and "campers". Once I got past the not so interesting gear (oh wait, I never did) I fired off not nearly enough shots. Post processing threw me for a loop. I figured I should try and work with some strong colors, but it just didn't feel right. Desat has got the best of me.

And we think our parents are behind the times...

At the conclusion of Summer Intensive I was able to go home for the first time in three months with Nate. It was very strange to have suddenly lost all of the daily structure I had been abiding by over the summer. I picked corn, snapped pees, painted chairs, took my Ruby for a spin and found out just how out of shape I have become, enjoyed time with the in-laws, went to an Iron and Wine concert with the rest of Salt Lake, and put my camera down for much too long. The break is just about over and I'm returning with a head full of questions. Keep the shutter flapping, friends.

I have many cycling shots all composed beautifully in my head, but when the time came creating them was just down right scary. Arms and pocket wizards would be amazing! Other things I've learned: Do ride uphill. Don't ride downhill. Things you've learned: yes, I was using your lens, Chad.

I said I'd do it for six years. Dreams are lived was your business. It might bend their spoons, but that's just fine. Six hours, forty five minutes with only one stop for Dew and seeds. A red summer, a chameleon, a girl and her camera. The chaos made it what it was. Cell phones and dead zones. Who'd think to laugh instead of cry?

Meet me by the railroad tracks. A bridge spanning infinity. A Bird's song we haven't forgot. An empty bottle of ranch, a dining room lost in gear, dirty dancing in the kitchen, to this we'll go back. An adventure perfectly like any other I've had with you. Together or not, it's ours. "Do you ever feel like we're just two little kids?" and we agree.

So here it is, my very first blog. Welcome friends and family. I will be mass posting to bring you up to speed on my life since I've started studying photography. It's been an awesome experience! I have had my head filled and refilled over and over with all things photography since June 3rd. While it wouldn't be uncommon to find me beating my head against the desk, I think I have managed to file away some very useful image making skills that all of our dear teachers have been cramming into our heads since day one. We have been able to enjoy the comforts (and discomforts) of studio, and it has proved to be at times very humorous and others very frustrating. I did a series of images on a fellow classmate Chad. We were assigned a model that we could costume in ALMOST any way we fancied.
